UNM has seen a 11% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions from 2006 to 2024 but is not on track to reach the 80% reduction goal set for 2030 as highlighted in the Climate Action Plan that was created in 2009 by UNM President David Schmidly. UNM has yet to acknowledge the climate emergency which could give the office of sustainability more opportunity for funding and actionable steps to reach emissions reduction targets.

A climate resolution introduced with help from UNM LEAF Leadership, ASUNM's Director of Environmental Affairs Feleecia Guillen, and Senator Jayce McCloud has passed full senate and was sent off to University administration. The resolution highlights the need for a formal acknowledgment of the global climate emergency, creation of a sustainability council, and a strategic sustainability plan that would lay out measurable goals and an action plan for carbon neutrality, responsible investments, and sustainable infrastructure on campus.
NOTE: University administration took no action as of the spring semester 2025.

Feleecia Guillen, Director of Communications and Outreach at UNM LEAF gives public comment for divestment from fossil fuels and Israeli apartheid and is met with opposition from Regent Fortner saying that "we can't divest like that" because of the benefit the fossil fuel industry has had on funding the University. Fortner told the Daily Lobo that "I don't believe anything I say or do is going to impact what happens there" (in Palestine).
