WHO WE ARE

We are a coalition of students, faculty, staff, and alumni at the University of New Mexico who recognize the urgent need to defend our communities from the devastation of climate change. Our work is dedicated to protecting our basic human rights and needs through environmentally based action and justice.

Our university is in a unique and difficult position, being in one of our country's largest oil and gas states. We hope to be part of changing the way we power our communities and how we empower each other to do better.

OUR GOALS

We aim to work with UNM to

  • Recognize the urgency of our situation and declare a climate emergency

  • Cultivate a waste-free, carbon-free campus

  • Divest from fossil fuels

  • Invest in environmentally conscious education and research

What we mean

The Regents of the University should permanently eliminate all funds that include fossil fuels in their portfolio.  UNM cannot claim to promote the interests of its students while investing in fossil fuel companies and economic systems that jeopardize their future.

CULTIVATE A CARBON FREE,
WASTE FREE CAMPUS

Creating a campus that is sustainable and regenerative is essential to ensuring the future of our planet, as it will allow us to move forward without fear of the climate crisis and it's effects. This includes 100% renewable energy and a zero waste campus.

INVEST IN
ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE EDUCATION AND RESEARCH

Invest in educational programs that empower students to understand their role in facilitating a just and equitable transition to a new energy economy. Develop curricula and infrastructure that prioritizes innovative research to help New Mexico prepare for the impacts of climate change and accelerate the transition to an economy free of fossil fuels that benefits all New Mexicans.
